Lead Developer

Job description

About OpenMind

In recent years, our society has become increasingly divided. Rather than appreciating our differences, all too often, people are viewing the world through an "us versus them" lens. OpenMind works to address these issues by translating the best behavioral science research into practicable, scalable, and evidence-based tools that equip people with the mindset and skillset to communicate and collaborate across differences. Our tools are built for use in many contexts, including workplaces, universities, and communities.

OpenMind is a non-partisan, non-profit organization that was co-founded by the social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, the author of the bestselling books The Righteous Mind and The Coddling of the American Mind. Since launching in 2017, our online program has reached more than 45,000 people in more than 900 classrooms, as well as 100+ organizations and companies, across more than 15 countries.

About the role

In our Lead Developer, we are looking for an enthusiastic, versatile tech generalist who prides themselves on being able to figure things out. You are someone who has worked as a full-time developer for a few years and also loves leading a team.

You will lead the selection, implementation, and management of technologies across the full life cycle of the learner experience, from onboarding to data reporting. As a key member of the Learning Solutions team, you will own the technology roadmap and manage the front-end and back-end developers to create impactful learner experiences.

Our tech stack is a cross between a custom platform and an out-of-the-box LMS. We build code and manage integrations using a third-party hosting and coding platform named GuidedTrack, and work directly with the creators of the language. You will have enough technical experience to dig into the code and support our developers, plan ahead for scaling needs of this blended technology, and work with our Learning Solutions team to execute on the requirements.

  • Manage our growing team (currently a full-time front-end developer and a back-end developer) and our UI/QA contractors to deliver cutting-edge eLearning solutions in GuidedTrack, a programming language that translates high-level code to create web applications

  • Lead development sprints/milestones based on prioritized requirements from Learning Solutions and Research teams

  • Proactively identify and communicate risks, problems, create solutions, and implement efficiency improvements

  • Develop a deep understanding of our technology infrastructure including our code in GuidedTrack, DynamoDB, APIs and future integrations

  • Ensure our compliance data security and privacy requirements

  • Assess the value and impact of new learning technologies, tools, and systems.

  • Create a comprehensive learning technology strategy and roadmap; gain buy-in from stakeholders and team members to drive adoption of the strategy.

  • Lead projects associated with automating team processes and compliance activities

Job requirements

  • 2+ years of professional software engineering experience with any/all of the following technologies:
    • Database management

    • Integrations/APIs

    • Javascript/HTML/CSS

    • Cloud technologies

  • 2+ years of team lead or engineering management experience, with demonstrated success applying a project management methodology

  • Experience managing data migration, creating interfaces, performing quality testing

  • Preference for experience in EdTech, creating eLearning and/or leading a team of eLearning developers

Why Work With Us

  • A Mission-Driven Culture — we practice what we preach, so we wear our values of intellectual humility, continuous learning, and non-partisanship on our sleeves

  • Remote First — OpenMind was founded as a remote first organization, and we work hard to maintain a strong team culture across vast distances (our small crew is spread across six states and three countries)

  • Compensation — salary starting from $115,000, negotiable, commensurate with expertise and experience

  • Unlimited PTO

  • Other Benefits — $400/mo reimbursement for health insurance premiums/expenses, subsidized parental leave, 401(k) program (not matched), short- and long-term disability insurance, life and AD&D insurance, $1,000 annual professional development budget

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment and will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, ancestry, or national or ethnic origin.
